for ash as griffin every day was different, but at the same time every day was pretty much the same. riley woke up around seven o’clock every morning, which was significantly earlier than most people she hung around with. the first thing she did was drink a cup of coffee, because that was the only way she could stay awake. her nights were long, usually lasting until around one or two in the morning. this gave her roughly five hours of sleep a night. that wasn’t all that bad, really. after all it was only three hours less than the recommended amount. still, she couldn’t help but wish that her sleep was longer. after her coffee she would sit down on the couch with her laptop. she was so predictable that she even sat in the same position every morning. her legs were crossed indian style, the laptop sitting in the small space between her knees. the news was on the television in front of her, but she was hardly paying any attention to it. every so often she would glance up, catching onto keywords in the stories. she’d glance at the weather, just to see if it was supposed to rain before giving her laptop her full attention again. the first thing she did was check her e-mail, which besides her phone, was the best way to contact her. it was actually possible that she checked her e-mail more than she checked her phone. for the most part, it was how she kept in contact with the people back home. even more importantly though, it was how she kept in touch with everyone at the office. questions, comments, and completed articles all came to her e-mail. it took her about thirty minutes to go through them all, then she was headed back into her bedroom to get ready for her morning jog.
the outfit riley slept in was extremely simple. all she wore was a cami and her underwear. it was comfortable and easy. plus changing in the morning was really easy. all she did was pull a pair of shorts on, take the cami off, throw on a sports bra, and pull a t-shirt on. it took less than two minutes. then she was clipping her ipod nano to the elastic on her shorts and heading out the door of her apartment. every morning she took thirty minutes to jog around her neighborhood. not only did it keep her in shape, it really kickstarted her day. it made her feel good about herself, and it helped her start off the day in a somewhat relaxed manner. with all of the things she did throughout the day, she needed to take every precaution she could toward stress. the feeling of being healthy and refreshed was her number one counter attack to stress. after her jog she headed back to her apartment where she showered and dressed for the day. as soon as she had her hair and make-up taken care of, she was headed out the door and to the office. on the way to the office, she would usually stop at starbucks and get another coffee. this one was just to get her through the rest of the day. at the office she spent her day going through articles, photos, and questions about assignments. the closer it got to the deadline, the more stressed she became. more and more papers piled up in front of her, and she took more time to look at each one of them to make sure everything was as perfect as it could possibly be. by the time she was finished at the office, all she really wanted to do was take a nap.
other days, riley worked from home. thanks to the internet and being able to connect to her office computer via her laptop, it was possible. it just wasn’t something that was always possible. she only did this on the days she had to take care of her nephew, zane. riley’s older sister was a paramedic, which resulted in her working twenty-four hour shifts. before going to work, her sister would drop zane off at riley’s. it was usually around seven thirty in the morning. he’d stay with riley until the next morning when she dropped him off at her sister’s before heading to the office. those were two of riley’s typical days. every so often she’d have a third kind of day. it didn’t come often, but when it did she took advantage of it. these were her days off. today was one of those days. she slept in later, waking up around ten in the morning. when she woke up, she still got her morning coffee. however, she didn’t log onto her laptop. instead she laid across the couch, watching whatever was on tv at the moment. it was usually something like the fresh prince. after a while of this, she would finally pull herself together and change into her clothes for the day. most of her days off were spent laying around her apartment, sleeping, and eating. every so often though, she would have other plans for her days off. today was one of those days. instead of just laying around, she was going to head over to griffin’s place and spend the day with him.
things with griffin were a lot different than any other relationship riley had been in. before him, she’d sworn that she’d leave and never look back if a guy ever cheated on her. then it actually happened, and things didn’t exactly go that way. this was something her sister constantly reminded her of almost every time she saw her. it was kind of irritating, always hearing how she was making a mistake by going back to griffin. no matter how hard she tried though, she couldn’t just walk away from him. sighing, riley ran her hand through her hair before stepping into the shower. she knew that taking griffin back wasn’t always the smartest idea. the girl wasn’t stupid. it was just that she really couldn’t help it. it was like he had some sort of charm to him. when things went bad, she just had to remind herself of all the good times they’d had. they’re good times were really, really good. so who could deny that? he could make her happy, sometimes. when he did, she was truly happy. those were the times that mattered. after her shower, riley quickly finished getting ready. her hair fell around her shoulder in light curls. she pulled on a pair of jean shorts and a tank top, applied a little bit of make-up, then headed out the door to griffin’s.
it didn’t take her too long to get to his place. as she stepped out of her car, she let out a small sigh. hopefully today would be one of those days that they got through without fighting about anything. the two of them could pick up a fight quite easily, which was something riley wasn’t a very big fan of. in reality, it was just as much her fault as his. the girl could be pretty vocal about the things she didn’t like about griffin. not to mention the fact that she hardly trusted him at all. it made being in a relationship with him really hard, but she put as much effort into it as she could. she made her way to the door, knocking on it several times before resting her head against it and closing her eyes. ”griff!” she called to him through the door, as if that would make him answer her faster. ”come on,” she muttered under her breath, eyes still closed as she tapped her foot impatiently. she just wanted inside so she could be as lazy here as she would be back home. that’s what her days off were for anyway.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(); width: 457px; padding-top: 30; padding-bottom: 30; -moz-border-radius: 35 35 35 35; -webkit-border-radius: 35 35 35 35;]hi alright, so admittedly, griffin wasn't the best boyfriend around. he snored, talked with his mouth full, and forgot to put the toilet seat down on a daily basis, and that was just the start of it. his redeeming qualities seemed to be lacking, and griff figured that if you were to ask his girlfriend about them, she wouldn't even be able to list anything. griffin was clearly the stereotypical 'tall, dark, and handsome' type, but his innards weren't as pretty to look at. egotistical, loud-mouthed, moronic... the list could go on forever. though, despite his horrible track record with riley, and his very obvious flaws, he was determined to make today a good one. granted, nothing would ever be perfect, but the romantically delusional singer was willing to give it a shot.
however, things were already starting off with a hitch. griffin slept through his alarm just like every other day of the week, and found himself rushing from the moment his eyelids cracked open. it was a battle to fight against the bright sun leaking in through the slats of his blinds, due to the remnants of a night full of drinking, but he figured he would just cover it up later. a nice shower would get rid of the throbbing headache and hopefully diminish the dark circles under his eyes. he had had this 'day date' planned with riley for almost a week now, and he just knew she would throw a fit of some epic proportions if he blew her off or forgot about it. quite frankly, he was in no state of mind to be dealing with that at all... even if it would make a good song idea. he pushed the thought to the back of his silly brain; realizing it was more important to patch things up with riley rather than sabotage himself into single life once again. he scrambled around his apartment in a blurred frenzy. he was tidying up quickly by kicking unfolded clothes into the closet, stacking dirty plates inside of the abused dishwasher, and doing a marathon through the hallway with a can of febreze air freshener. he was a guy! what else could you expect? at least he put some effort into it at all. normally, he simply left his door unlocked, laid in bed, and waited for guests to let themselves in out of pure irritation. not today.
he heard riley rapping on the door and whimpered slightly; weighing his options in his head. there was still a long checklist of things to do, but some were more important than others. case in point... find some throw pillows for the couch, or put on pants? griffin looked down to his bare legs and boxer shorts before biting his lip. he gave his complex another once-over before giving up. it was good enough, and probably better looking that riley was used to in the first place. he darted off toward his bedroom and snatched a clean v-neck up off of his dresser and came loping back to the front door. thanks to his smoker lungs, he was just a hint out of breath, but so be it. hold on, he murmured as he fumbled with the door lock and pulling the grey shirt over his head. pants would have to wait for now, even if they were other people's first priority.
the knocking still rang in his ears, even though he had pulled open the door. you know, for someone who's just coming over to lay on the couch, you're a pretty impatient person. he said with a slightly playful tone and gleam in his eye. he readjusted the wrinkled shirt over his torso before stepping to the side to let riley in... but not before he could kiss her forehead. it seemed like such a far way to bend down sometimes that kissing her up there was just easier. griff was all about ease, in case you hadn't noticed. he shut the door and stifled a gigantic yawn; hand running through his tangled bedhead of hair. hi, he finally said without a touch of attitude in his voice. he'd already gotten his brief little frustrated thoughts out, joking or not, and was ready to just move on.
looking at riley made him think pretty hard. seeing her face wasn't just another sight, but a trigger for a flood of memories that came smashing back into him every time he laid eyes on her. it was horrible and wonderful all at once. the thoughts of the nights spent sleeping in hammocks, days spent at the beach, and afternoons lounging around were what kept them together in griffin's mind because riley was no doubt thinking about those times as well. griff relied so heavily on their past to keep riley hooked into his love life. he really did care about her and all, but he was a glutton, and needed to sample what everyone had to offer. it wasn't an excuse, but it was definitely true, at least. griffin very rarely thought about the fights they had. mainly this was because everything turned into a fight between the two of them... but still. just because there were too many bickering arguments to remember, he still loved her deep down. seriously.
you look nice. he said with a slightly sheepish grin. if only he could say the same about himself, and his obvious 'i just rolled out of bed' apparel. sure, he could play it off as lounge wear since that was all they had on the agenda for the day, but come on. riley knew griffin better than he probably knew himself at times, and there was no way he was going to fool her. he toyed around with his ruffled hair again before stepping around her to get to his kitchen. are you hungry, ri? he asked over his shoulder as he pulled the fridge open, swaying from foot to foot. oh, and how's zane? he inquired, with real curiosity. he knew that although riley's sister probably hated him, zane was a pretty unavoidable dude in his life. if he was around riley, zane usually was too, so there was really no stopping it. however, today griffin was just glad he could have his sort of girlfriend all to himself... and with a wide open couch and cozy blankets to top it all off. 1065 WORDS FOR NICOLE AS RILEY WOOHOO I SUCK

for ash as griffin despite the fact that griffin wasn’t the ideal boyfriend, riley couldn’t help but love him. not only did they have a really good past together, with dates so cute an aromantic would probably want to jump off a cliff, riley was convinced that griffin really did try. sometimes. not to mention the fact that for some reason beyond any explanation, she loved him. she really did. he was a good person, once you got past that first layer of college frat boy attitude. that’s why she enjoyed spending time alone with him. when she got him alone, that first layer seemed to go away. sure, he was still a bit of a mess. but really what bachelor kept his place looking nice? the state of his house wasn’t something you could really hold against him. if anything, it was actually pretty comfortable. it had a lazy feel to it, which was something riley didn’t get to have very often. her apartment was tidy. nothing was out of place. the whole place had a business feel to it, which was what she wanted to escape on her days off. being at griffin’s, she felt like she could be lazy and have no regrets.
after what seemed like years of waiting, riley could hear someone on the other side of the door trying to mess with the lock. that little noise alone told her what to expect when the door opened. if she had to assume, she’d say that griffin was trying to do four or five things at once to prepare himself for her arrival. a small smirk developed across her lips as the door finally swung open to reveal that she was most likely right. griffin stood there in a shirt in boxers, quite the odd apparel in riley’s opinion. at the same time, she wasn’t shocked. in most cases, he didn’t think like other people did. other guys would have grabbed pants and gone shirtless. instead, griff did just the opposite. it was the little quirks like this that hooked her to him. he kept things interesting at least. plus, in some weird way, she found the mess that he was to be kind of cute, hot, sexy, and just plain attractive. just seeing him like that made her ready to spend the day with him.
as he bent down to kiss her forehead, riley bit down on her lower lip and smiled. even if he was just being too lazy to bend down to her lips, she still loved any affection he showed her. it made her feel like she was his and he was hers, which was what she really wanted anyway. ”yeah, but i can’t lay on the couch when i’m standing outside,” she said with a matter-of-fact yet teasing tone. it looked like he’d rolled out of bed whenever she first knocked on the door, and the way he ran his hand through his hair and stifled that yawn also made it seem that way. ”hey,” she laughed. part of her wanted to suggest they just go crawl into his bed and sleep. he would most likely agree to that, seeing as he still seemed to be half asleep anyway. however, she wanted to actually spend time with him. awake. maybe they could take a nap later. that wasn’t something she’d object to. it was rare that she got the chance to nap anyway, let alone nap while cuddled up next to griffin. the more she thought about it, the more appealing it seemed.
sleeping with griffin, truly sleeping in the literal sense of the word, was actually a really peaceful thing. it was easier to relax and let sleep overtake her when he wrapped his arms around her and held her close. that was mostly in their past though, seeing as their future was filled more with fighting than happy moments. it sucked. riley hated it. but it seemed completely unavoidable. it all started with that first fight, when riley had gone straight to him and confronted him about messing around. the second she forgave him, things just went downhill. her sister blamed her for it, saying that forgiving him the way she had just put it in his head that it was okay. as long as riley kept forgiving him, he was going to keep doing it. because she was letting him get away with it. what else was she supposed to do? not forgiving him meant not having him, and that wasn’t something riley was a fan of. today was going to be one of those good days though. it would be just like the days they used to have. riley was determined for that.
when griffin told her she looked nice, she gave him a slightly confused look before looking down at her outfit. it was incredibly simple, and it definitely wasn’t her nicest. this was her lazy day outfit, so she wasn’t quite sure what was so nice about it. but when she looked at him, it kind of made sense. ”thanks. but i wish i’d gotten the memo about this being a no pants party.” she smirked, looking at his boxers and shaking her head slightly. as he headed to the kitchen, riley headed to the couch. things seemed slightly picked up, but she assumed all of this had been done within the few minutes she was standing outside the door. ”um, maybe a little.” she turned and leaned against the couch, watching him as he went through the fridge. during her work days, riley didn’t really get the chance to sit down and eat whenever she wanted to. because of this, she typically had a hard time determining whether or not she was hungry. her stomach was used to being fed at random, usually in little bits at a time. when he questioned about zane, she couldn’t help but smile. griffin had been around zane several times, mostly because the days she had zane were her least busy days as far as work went. they seemed to get along well too, which was good. riley’s sister wasn’t a big fan of zane being around griffin, as if the four year old would pick up the older boy’s ways. that didn’t really matter to riley, and she let him around anyway. plus, zane seemed to enjoy having a guy around. it wasn’t like he got to hang out with one very often. ”he’s good. he asked about you when i had him last. i have him again tomorrow. you should come see him.”
pushing herself off the couch, riley walked up behind griffin in the kitchen. her arms wrapped around his torso, placing her forehead against his back. for a moment she just stood there like that, holding onto him. it was a nice feeling, something she didn’t get to do a lot. sometimes she blamed herself for the fact that griffin stepped out. all she did was work. times like this didn’t come around very often. it was only logical that he want someone he could be with whenever he wanted. a small sigh came from her before she let go out of him. ”do you have anything specific planned for today?” she stepped to the side of him, leaning against the counter next to him. she only stayed there for a second before she stepped in front of him, going up on her toes so she could take his face into her hands and pull his lips to hers. it was a quick kiss, but it was something that she wanted nonetheless. when she let go of him and stood flat footed once again, she smiled up at him. ”you know, i miss that a lot when i’m working.” again she leaned against the counter, biting down on the bottom of her lip slightly as she looked at him.

easier said than done, but here griffin was. his too relaxed manner left him stressing and running, but the moment riley was in his sight, his worries and frets seemed to evaporate. seriously. it sounded like completely mushy gushy romantic stuff, but it was true. he knew that on their good days, griffin was riley's escape to peace. she deserved that after working so hard, balancing her life with zane, and dealing with his constant shit. why not behave himself for a day, at least? he rolled his eyes at her before shaking his head slightly about him not wearing pants. oh, come on. he snorted. you mean you don't like it? i thought i'd surprise you. i put on my plaid for you and now you don't even appreciate it. he teased, unable to keep a straight face for too long. the corners of his mouth finally twitched enough to give into a real smile, and he let out a small laugh once she had passed. whatever. he knew she was kidding, and all that mattered to him was that he'd actually gotten out of bed for her. that was a big step in the right direction itself, so he was at least pretty proud he'd reached that juncture. he scratched his head in thought as he let the chilly fridge linger open. he stared inside blankly for a while, not really caring whether she was hungry or not, because he was pretty determined to feed her anyway. if not now, eventually. it irritated him beyond belief that riley was such a workaholic sometimes. neglecting food to get an article done day in and day out somehow made him mad... probably only because she refused to go out to lunch with him if she was too busy. still, he could try.
he raised an eyebrow at the mention of zane before shrugging and nodding, still consumed with the fridge. oh. um, yeah. maybe i'll stop by or something. he agreed with a quick glance over to riley. it wasn't that he didn't like zane... he just felt that it was a pressured situation. he liked being a sort of brother/father/friend figure in the little boy's life, but sometimes when he thought about it too hard, he turned into riley and griffin's child. that part worried him, and if riley thought he was bad at handling zane or being around him, what would make her want to stick around for the future? certainly it was a big conclusion to be jumping to, with the both of them only in their early twenties... but still, he imagined. he didn't want to seem like some failture or obsolete figure to riley or zane, even, which probably put a bit of an explanation behind his flightiness as well. as stupid as griffin knew it was, he couldn't quite help it. just call me or something when you wake up. he shrugged once more; only to find her right behind him.
griffin couldn't help but smile as he felt her arms snake around his sides. it was nice to feel this kind of affection instead of, perhaps, a slap or a pinch. he gave her hands a quick squeeze before she unwrapped herself from him, and tried to wipe the giddy grin off his face before she could see. well, i thought we could just hang. he said truthfully; suddenly feeling rather bashful for his lack of planning. sorry. if you want to do something though, we can head out or whatever. i don't really care, i just thought you'd want to take it easy. griffin didn't really mind what they did, as long as they were together for once. either way, he didn't seem to be doing too bad. if she were mad, she definitely wouldn't have kissed him. there was no playing around when riley got ticked off, so he knew he was at least on the right track.
oh yeah? he questioned coyly, sidling up to her. well, you know, i miss you in general when you're working. he said with a fleeting glance before he was off, and walking toward his room. how is work, by the way? he asked over his shoulder as he quickly leaned into his bedroom and pulled a pair of jeans off the floor. busy, i know. but like, do you actually like it, or what? he asked curiously as he pulled his pants on and buttoned them up. he folded his tan arms as he rejoined riley against the counter, casually leaning. because if you hate it, you could just like, move in here and i'll take care of you. he teased, although deep down, he wouldn't actually mind it. though, he was pretty certain that eventually dishes would be thrown, and televisions would be pushed off of balconies. maybe they should hold off.
hell, they had been seeing each other on and off for a year. didn't most couples their age already live together by now? he bit his lip in thought, but tried to appear not too caught up in his bad joke. he needed a distraction, and what better way to occupy himself than by leaning over, and giving her a real kiss? he was pretty thankful brushing his teeth had made his 'important list' of things to do before she got here, and smiled as he pulled away. come on, he started up, extending his hand to her rather officially for no real reason. we have a couch to be sat upon and shitty morning infomercials to be watched.

for ash as griffin days of relaxation came once in a blue moon for riley, so if anything messed this up she was going to throw a royal fit. the kind that you would expect from a six year old who didn’t get to go to chuck e. cheese. except instead of a lot of loud yet innocent crying, it would be full of a lot of screaming, hitting, and possibly a bit of cursing every now and then. that meant a lot, considering curse words rarely crossed riley’s lips. the girl had to be extremely angry to even think about cursing. she’d matured a lot since she’d started taking care of zane, and one of the things she rid herself of was a dirty mouth. the last thing she wanted was the little boy to start repeating things he shouldn’t even be hearing. it was actually nice though, and she felt a lot better as far as her attitude was. being around zane helped her a lot. he was a free spirit, as most kids were. being around that helped riley realize that it was okay to not stress about work. sometimes. it was still something she was getting used to, but she was here with griffin on her day off instead of on her laptop at home, trying to keep up with things. that meant something, didn’t it?
like zane, griffin’s “i don’t care” attitude helped her realize that you didn’t always have to stress about work. that’s why she liked seeing him as a mess. it was a refreshing change from the uptight business apparel that she was constantly seeing. when he rolled his eyes at her comment, riley made a mock offended face. her arms crossed against her chest and she leaned back a bit, waiting for what he had to say with a somewhat amused look on her face. ”i never said i didn’t like it. i always appreciate your plaid, babe. i just wish i’d been informed. i would have worn something nice for you.” she laughed along with him, knowing that his mind would probably take that and run with it. not that she cared, he could do whatever he wanted to her in his little imagination. plus, it wasn’t like she hadn’t walked around his place in nothing but her boy shorts anyway. and she’d do it again. walking around in her underwear wasn’t something she did too often back at her place, mostly because she was either working on something, or she had zane. there wasn’t much opportunity for it. so when she came over here, she was always up for just lounging out in her undergarments. it was freeing, and she’d be a liar if she said she didn’t like using it against griffin. as he focused his attention on the fridge, riley’s hand made its way to the button on her jean shorts. for a moment she debated taking them off, just to even the playing field. in the end, she decided against it. not right now anyway.
the tone of griffin’s voice told riley that he wasn’t really looking forward to seeing zane. or at least he was bit nervous about it. why he wouldn’t be nervous, she wasn’t so sure. zane loved griffin, and riley was sure that it was obvious. there had been some awkward moments, but luckily griffin wasn’t actually around for those. being the young age that he was, zane had a lot of curiosity. he was always asking questions, and riley had to do her best to answer them. one of those questions would be, if she was aunt ri did that mean he was uncle griff? it was a logical question, seeing as zane had seen other kids who had both an aunt and uncle that were together, just like other kids had a mother and a father that were together. but at least zane knew who his father was, even if he only got to see him about once a month. at first riley had been thrown off guard by the question. it was a hard situation to explain, but the first thing she did was assure zane that griffin wasn’t his uncle, but he was a friend. the whole boyfriend ordeal seemed a bit too complicated to explain to a four year old, so she just stuck with the fact that griffin was a friend. a good friend that aunt ri liked to spend time with. this was something she’d kept from griffin, mostly because she was afraid that he’d have a small heart attack over it. at least zane had asked instead of just calling him uncle griff though. it saved them from a very awkward moment. yeah, i’ll call. he’d love to see you.” she smiled slightly, hoping griffin felt the same about zane deep down.
the small squeeze he gave her hands brought a smile to her face and butterflies into her stomach. it was probably weird that things like this still happened to her after a year, but maybe it was because things weren’t always this nice with them. ”no, no. hanging is just fine.” she ran a hand through her hair, letting it fall around her face and not really caring where it went. it left it a bit messy, but it wasn’t like she was trying to impress griffin anymore. ”taking it easy sounds fantastic.” when she’d asked if he had anything in mind, she wasn’t thinking that he had plans to go out or anything. that wasn’t what she wanted to do, if she were completely honest. laying around here with him was beyond perfect. she just didn’t know if he had plans for around the house. it was fine that he didn’t.
watching as he headed to his room, riley sighed a bit. she knew that he missed her while she was constantly working. that was why he stepped out on her. he needed someone who was there. ”yeah, i like it. i mean, the stress can get annoying. but that’s just part of deadlines and what not.” she couldn’t help but laugh at him a bit as he picked a pair of jeans up off his floor and pulled them on. there was no telling what it looked like on the other side of his bedroom door or how long those pants had been laying there. when he joined her again, she smirked slightly. of course he was joking about her moving in with him, but it was kind of a sweet idea. ”you know if i moved in here, i’d still have to work. i can’t just not work. it’s not me.” she laid her head against his shoulder for a moment, letting out a long breath. sometimes she wished working wasn’t in her nature. it would probably make her life a lot easier.
his kiss caught her a bit off guard, but she wasn’t complaining. not at all. she actually smiled against his lips, an immediate reaction to the small contact. after they broke, she took his hand with the smile still gracing her lips. as he led her to the couch, she couldn’t help but laugh at his joke about morning infomercials. ”can we snuggle up and watch the price is right like some old married couple?” it seemed kind of fitting, since some people would probably argue that they could fight like an old married couple. when they sat down, she leaned against him looking up to kiss the underside of his jaw. with a sigh, she let herself sink into him. ”i’ve missed you, griffin,” she told him, her voice barely a whisper.

good. griffin said honestly. although the last thing he needed to deal with was some candid picture of him with zane circling around online, he decided he might as well. first of all, he had nothing to do tomorrow. and second, more time with riley wouldn't be so bad. a few stupid speculating rumors couldn't top another day hanging out with his lady, and maybe entertaining zane a bit so she could catch up on today's work would impress her. griffin's competitive mind decided this was actually a very good idea, and he was suddenly rather into it. and, to be honest, he was sort of looking forward to it. maybe i'll take him off of your hands for a while. to like, get ice cream, or go to the park, or... something. he was practically a kid himself, so it was odd he couldn't think of anything else to do that zane might be interested. he still had a while to figure it out, though. anything to prove himself to riley would be great. i mean, if you want. he added in hastily; not to seem like some crazed kidnapper or something. he was merely trying to help.
more often than not, when griffin said he was going to help someone out, it actually meant he only wanted to do it because something was in it for him at the end. this might serve true for the whole zane situation, but truthfully, griff really didn't mind spending time with him. griffin had been an only child growing up, so it was actually sort of fun to have a little tagalong pal. he couldn't imagine not having a dad in the picture for the most part, so part of his teeny tiny heart actually went out to the little one, and was very soft indeed. it was the least he could do, and just as he wanted to make riley happy, he could make zane''s day in the process as well. hopefully, anyway.
he nodded thankfully as she approved of today's schedule. cool. he grinned. i figured you could use a real day off, for once. griff said thoughtfully. the boy knew that she was normally stuck doing chaotic things, even on her days off. the last time he had tried to do something with her on a vacation day that was all planned out, it hadn't gone so well. the two were stuck running around the city, trying to catch a taxi from place to place in the unexpected downpour rain, and ended up arriving at a restaurant that didn't follow through with reservations. this... well, this was just much easier. that day hadn't been a complete flop, though. at least griff got to fulfill his dreams of seeing riley in a wet t-shirt. always mr. positive.
griff listened to her pleasantly, grasping her words and trying to soak it in. he knew it wasn't her fault for being uptight and stressed. it was work, and it wasn't like she was just going to go and quit that great opportunity just to make a baby like him happy. he'd just have to grow up, and that was some reassurance of the fact right there. i was on my highschool newspaper, he muttered as he pulled the typical guy move and sagged his jeans just the right amount. i sucked at it. i turned stuff in like two weeks late, never spell-checked, and just sort of slopped shit -- stuff -- together the night before. he had to chuckle, thinking back to the times. the only reason he had been on newspaper was to avoid suspension for a month for getting caught hooking up during a detention. not much really changed, to be honest. whatever. as long as you're happy and you still make time for me, i'm good.
griff was pretty hard to please. sure, his idea of a perfect day involved good tv and a bowl of weed, but in a broader spectrum, it took a lot to keep him happy. he thrived in constant attention like a kid, and when he was ignored, he acted out. he didn't really realize he did it, but still. it happened, and it got him into a lot of bad situations, as riley obviously knew. for now though, he was quite happy and beside himself as they settled down onto the couch. of course, babe. he said with a people-pleaser of a smile. he snatched her up into his lap after she kissed his jaw and linked his arms around her middle. i've missed you, too. he said just as quietly; resting his cheek against her's as he pulled the remote out from underneath the cushion beside them. but you, i'm always here if you need me. he added, pulling away from her slightly to make sure he caught her eye and she knew how serious he was.
he grimaced slightly as he thought about how they actually rarely got to see one another in this circumstance and leaned back again. there he was, being all mushy and dependent again. god forbid she saw him actually feeling an emotion or something. that was just 'unheard of,' according to griffin. you always smell really good. |
he commented as he flipped through channels before finding what riley had requested. he nestled his chin into the slope of her neck and shoulder and rested there, twiddling his interlocked fingers wrapped around her torso. love you, ri. he practically whispered before giving her a quick peck on the cheek before resting back into his little spot. hey, at least they weren't fighting.[/div] 1153 WORDS FOR NICOLE AS RILEY YAY THEY'RE CUTE

for ash as griffin the whole big teddy bear term was one that could easily be applied to griffin. it was just that riley was probably one of the only people who got to see that. it didn’t really shock her when people seemed surprised about him being in a relationship. a lot of people didn’t believe her when she said that she was dating griffin bueller, not that she told a lot of people anyway. it wasn’t that she didn’t want them to know. there was a lot more to it than that. there was the fact that half the time she didn’t know if they were currently together or currently fighting. then there was the fact that she got tired of hearing people respond with a scoff and snide comment about how he’s probably cheating on her while they speak. it bothered her. she didn’t have must trust in him anyway, and she definitely didn’t need people making that worse. as much as she tried to let those kind of comments roll of her shoulders, she really couldn’t. deep down, they got to her. and she could still remember the first time an article with griffin’s name had come across her desk. a nicely sized fight followed that one, and the article had been trashed. she couldn’t help but smirk at his comment, rolling her eyes in a teasing way. there really wasn’t a response for that. anything she said would probably lead to more comments which would lead to actions. at this particular moment, riley wasn’t wanting to go to actions. she wanted to relax a bit first.
a bright, genuine smile crossed riley’s lips when griffin seemed pleased about spending some time with zane. when he suggested that he take zane out to the park or ice cream, riley let out a small squeal. it was pretty sudden, and she wasn’t exactly sure why it came out of her. there was really no reason for her to be so excited about griffin spending time with zane, but she couldn’t really help it. ”that would be amazing,” she told him with the bright grin still there. maybe she was excited because she knew how happy zane would be. he almost never got to spend time alone with another guy, so spending some time with just griffin would probably be good for him. sure, riley’s sister would have a panic attack if she knew, but didn’t have to know. ”of course, of course. he’d love that. i just apologize in advance for any odd questions he may ask you. he’s a curious kid, you know?” the only thing she really worried about was zane asking griffin some off the wall question about herself. it was possible. the little boy was always full of surprises.
a small laugh came from her when he mentioned having a real day off. he’s right though. even riley’s days off weren’t days off. typically she’d either work from home, or she’d be taking care of zane. not that she minded having zane on her days off, it just didn’t give her the chance to take a break. then there was their dates that turned into catastrophes. it was pretty much certain that if riley was out and about, she was going to be stressing about something. even when she was in, she tended to stress about things. so today’s lazy day was just what she needed. if she started stressing about something, it was likely that griffin would brush it away in any way that he could. if only he could just follow her around and always do that. wouldn’t life just be great? ”yeah. i need to start scheduling them more often. but that would be a perfect world, and that’s just not going to happen.” she sighed, blowing some loose strands of hair out of her face in the process.
the fact that griffin was on his school newspaper came as a shock to her. that wasn’t something she really expected. but when he continued on with his story, a groan came from her, and she shook her head before placing her palm against her forehead. ”oi. you’re the kind of person who gives the editor headaches. i’d ring your neck.” she let out a small laugh, dropping her hand and looking over at him. it was the typical griffin though, and she would expect nothing less from him. ”i’ll try to make more time for you, babe. it’s just difficult sometimes. really though. i’ll see what i can do.” it bothered her, deeply bothered her, how little time she had with griffin. all she wanted was to be able to have days like this anytime she wanted to, but it just seemed impossible with her job. that is unless she started calling in at random, saying she couldn’t make it in. it was always possible for her to do that, but then she’d feel guilty. plus, she’d get behind. then she thought of something, and couldn’t help but laugh. ”you know, babe. you could always stop by the office for a quick... visit.” she looked at him, biting down on her lower lip. it was a bad idea. it was a very bad idea. but it amused her nonetheless.
sitting in griff’s lap was one of those moments that riley stuck around for. it was a rather simple thing, but it still made her feel special inside. the butterflies started again, and that giddy smile crossed her lips again. his arms around her torso, everything about this just made her happy. this was everything she had ever wanted. it was moments like this that made it hard to believe that they were quick to fight. if she could make this moment last for a lifetime, she would. no work. no fighting. no stress. just her and griffin, being exactly how they should be. ”i know griffin,” she looked back at him, glad to see sincerity in his eyes. this was one of those rare moments when she actually trusted his word, because she knew that anytime she needed something she could call him and he’d do it. that was one of the many reasons she’d fallen for griffin. it may seem like there was no reason for her to stick with him, but really there were plenty.
he leaned back again, and she took that as her opportunity to rest against his chest. he’d found the price is right on the tv, just like she asked him to. however, she couldn’t help but feel that it was a little different now that bob barker wasn’t hosting anymore. drew carey wasn’t bad. he just wasn’t bob. ”oh, thanks.” she was a little confused by his random comment, but she took it anyway. after he rested his chin against her shoulder, she sank farther into him. ”i love you too, griff.” she told him, resting her hands on top of his. she pretty much forced her hands into his, lacing her fingers with his. it was kind of weird, the word love being exchanged between the two of them. it wasn’t something anyone else would expect from them, but they both knew they felt it. it was the only thing that made them work. unlacing their fingers, she sat forward and turned to face him. again she kissed him before laying against him. ”i feel like i never know what’s going on with you. how’s the band?” most of the time when they got the chance to sit down and talk about work like things, it was riley’s work they were discussing. typically, the only time riley ever heard anything about down over dover was when she reading about it in an article. that was kind of a crappy way of hearing about your boyfriend’s band.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image:url(); width: 457px; padding-top: 30; padding-bottom: 30; -moz-border-radius: 35 35 35 35; -webkit-border-radius: 35 35 35 35;]hi being out on tour was something griffin would probably never be able to get used to. being anywhere besides here in california, or delaware... well, it just felt weird to him. griffin was spontaneous as all hell, but traveling the entire country in a matter of a few months was sort of ridiculous, and a hard concept for him to grasp. he felt so lonely sometimes on the bus; meeting 'friends' for one day and then meeting some more the next. everyone started turning into strangers until he saw them the next time down over dover toured, and it all started over again. it was just plain bizarre and although griff loved his job to bits, it was something he could do without. having a place to call his own here actually meant something to him. he could come home to his own apartment and do whatever he pleased. of course, griffin barely worried about anyone else anyway, but still. he wasn't cramped inside of a tin can called a bus for sixty days straight, and he could actually let his guard down and relax. strangely enough, he was still comfortable enough to do it even with riley here. in fact, she sort of made everything a little bit easier.
riley, in general, made him a happier person. when they weren't at each other's throats, they made one another laugh so hard their stomachs hurt, and smile so much their cheeks went numb. it had always been this way, the chemistry, and griff was very grateful for that. prior to meeting her and zane, he had trouble believing in love. he watched and learned, though, and from there on out it was just practice. her small squeal of excitement reared him from his thoughts and he smiled back quickly despite the slightly distressed wrinkle to his forehead. girls screaming or shrieking or anything like that usually wasn't a good sign, but the grin on her face said otherwise. girls these days. he shrugged as she apologized in advance. it's no big deal. i'm probably weirder than he is, and i'm in my twenties. |
he tugged at a piece of his hair, absent mindedly twisting it around as he tried not to yawn once more. besides, i'm sure he'll tell me some really interesting stories about you if i'm extra nice. he trailed off in an attempt to be mysterious, though he was obviously just trying to make her laugh. the thing that scared griffin the most in life was taking things seriously. he had never really been a big fan of that in the past, considering he was the class clown and typical slacker, and since then, the urgency of responsibility still never really caught up to him. listening to riley talk about her job made him anxious and gave him an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of his stomach; even overpowering the butterflies that she still managed to give him. he feared for his future -- if the band broke up or didn't hit it big... what the hell would he do? he watched her blow hair from her face and was no longer tense. he was back to the conversation, and enlightened. well next time you decide to work from home, just come over here and do it, he suggested quietly. i won't bug you or anything. it would just be nice to have you around, even if we aren't like, doing anything. it was a meek effort, but an effort nonetheless. i'm not exactly what you would call 'disciplined,' ri. he grinned, imagining her as his boss. that would not go well. at all. plus, i was writing about stupid shit like air fresheners for gym lockers and why gum should be banned at school. dumb. griff was a bit of a baby sometimes. if he wasn't interested in it, it wasn't going to happen. he was definitley selfish by all definitions, but he'd been a spoiled kid growing up and he never really strayed from the egocentric path. thanks, he was glad she would try to make more time for him, but he still felt a bit bad about dragging her away. he was selfish, but that didn't mean he didn't have a little bit of heart. i never really thought about that, but yeah. i guess i could do that. he spluttered; rather dumbfounded. it was pretty doable, and she might even appreciate it if he brought her lunch or something once in a while. he would add that to his list of things to do, and hope he eventually got around to it if laziness didn't get the best of him. as they sat in such closeness, he was rather grateful. unfortunately, griff didn't really take much time to chill out and think about all of the wonderful things he had; riley being one of them. that alone was probably one of the major stressors in their relationship. griff took riley for granted, and so it didn't seem like such a big deal when they fought. for some reason in his head, riley always came back to him. he knew those days of complete confidence were running out, though. he leaned against her and the couch and smelled her aromatic shampoo, felt her soft hands, and small body. he tried to picture himself without any of that perfect comfort, and he struggled. to know that riley understood he was serious meant quite a bit... especially since he was very rarely serious at all. he kissed the side of her head with a sense of closure, and left it at that. he was very comfortable and happy to let riley lay on him. it wouldn't be the first time he served as her pillow, and he actually like the sense of stability it gave him. his arm held her tight, and it was just one of those things that made him feel good inside. to hear her repeat the 'l' word back to him was another one of those things. it made his smile a hundred feet wide, despite how tired he was and the intensely distracting stakes of the game show on in the background. he chuckled slightly as felt her tiny hands be gobbled up by his paws, and gave her another little squeeze before she let go and turned. he raised an eyebrow inquisitively as she kissed him suddenly, but questioned it no further. she spoke instead. oh, um. i don't know. we aren't really doing anything much since we're done recording and all. it's just a waiting game, now. he grimaced, thinking of all the busy weeks of press, touring, and more to come. despite his sour attitude, it would be worth it in the end. he was sure of it. for ash as griffin riley could still remember the night her sister called her and told her that she was going to be an aunt. at first she wasn’t sure how to feel about it, because her sister wasn’t married at the time. in fact, she didn’t get married until zane was a year old. then just over a year later, when the little boy was two, riley got another phone call from her sister. this one informed her of the divorce. things just weren’t working out, which didn’t really surprise riley at all. the only reason the two parents had gotten married at all was because they felt it was right for zane. zane’s father had been a lot like griffin, which was probably why her sister was so against riley’s relationship. it also made it hard for riley to defend herself with phrases like “you don’t understand” because she did. however, she did have a little bit of a defense. it just wasn’t a very strong one. griffin was not and is not her sister’s ex. they’re two different people. who was to say that griffin would end up being the same way? actually, who was to say that riley and griffin would end up married with a kid? the future was very murky for riley. nothing was set in stone. would she like to have something like that with griffin? maybe. there was just this small part of her mind that was afraid griffin would end up like her sister’s ex, and riley wasn’t sure if she could handle that.
if they could keep things civil, the way they were right now, riley saw no reason not to have a future with griffin. if anything it was ideal. the times she’d seen him with zane, things went well. it wasn’t like he’d picked the boy up and dropped him on his head or anything. plus, zane adored griffin. if anyone should be the judge of how well griff was with kids, it should be the kid. it seemed logical for the two boys to have some guy time together, and it’d probably help riley see exactly how well griffin could handle a child. she had no doubt in him, and she expected everything to go beyond well. as long as zane didn’t ask him where babies come from, everything would probably run smoothly. ”that’s true,” she agreed with a small laugh. it was only true because guys have a tendency of never growing up, but riley kept that thought to herself. ”i don’t think he could tell you anything that you don’t already know,” she said with a smirk. if someone were to ask zane to describe riley, he’d probably tell them she was busy. even when she had him with her, she had seemed to be rushing around to get things done.
people had to wonder how riley and griffin managed to be a couple. not only did they have their trust issues, there was the fact that they were pretty much complete opposites. griffin wasn’t a fan of being serious. riley was all business. it seemed like a train wreck waiting to happen. however, that was probably one of the few things that made them work. they evened each other out. griffin helped riley learn to relax and not stress so much, while she helped him see that sometimes you had to be a bit serious about things. the train wreck only happened when they didn’t have each other there to balance the scale. ”oh yeah. i guess i could do that. i never really thought about it. i usually have zane though, so i’d have to bring him with me. and you’d have to deal with me in business mode.” it was probably shocking, hearing that riley had a business mode when it seemed like she was always about business. it just got worse during work hours. her focus became her laptop or the papers on her desk. it was hard to break her attention away.
she shrugged a bit when griffin went on to explain his newspaper job from high school. it made sense, not wanting to write about things you had no interest in. that was just part of it sometimes though, and it would still give riley a tremendous headache to work around someone like that. she was beyond grateful to be surrounded by the writers that worked with her. they always seemed willing and excited about each story that was thrown at them. it made her job a lot easier. yelling wasn’t her thing, so she was glad that she never had to yell at anyone. her suggestion seemed to have caught him off guard, and when he actually agreed she couldn’t help but wonder if he’d caught on to her double meaning. if he were to come to her office for some sort of rendezvous, it would be pretty difficult to get her away from her work to actually do anything with him. he’d most likely have to do one of those movie-like movements where he just pushed everything off the desk and threw her onto it. ”wait... really?” she sat back in shock for a moment. it always seemed like griffin tried to avoid her office, but she couldn’t really blame him either. ”you do know what i meant... right?” they at least needed to be on the same page for this, because if they weren’t things could get very strange at her office. the more she thought about it, the more it seemed like a bad idea anyway. her co-workers would probably catch on, and things would end up very awkward at staff meetings.
something riley really missed about when she’d first gotten with griffin was laying against him and falling asleep to the sound of his heartbeat. it was incredibly cheesy, cliche, and mushy gushy. it happened though, and she’d loved it. it was a peaceful feeling, and she’d do it again anytime she got the chance. just hearing his heart gave her a sense of safety and security. it was like having his arms around her. nothing could touch her at that point, because he was protecting her. she was safe. when he held her, part of her felt like his teddy bear. this was mostly because of the size difference though, and it wasn’t anything that bothered her. she liked being his teddy bear. being cuddled up with him was something she would never complain about. ”yeah, i knew you were done recording,” she told him with a small nod. it was another one of those things that came across her desk. ”i guess that means you’ll be touring soon, right?” her voice dropped a bit and her gaze went down. it wasn’t that she didn’t want him to tour, exactly. she realized that was part of his job. there were going to weeks, months even, that she didn’t get to see him face to face. it sucked, but that was part of it. and that’s were trust usually came into play. that’s why riley hated the fact that he had to tour. she wasn’t there. so some other girl probably was.

you're just saying that so i don't find out anything embarrassing that i can use to blackmail you later on, griff countered smugly as he decided he was going to make a pit stop to the candy store before dropping by riley's apartment tomorrow. a little bit of bribery for zane in the form of chocolate and sugar wouldn't hurt, would it? anything to make riley wriggle was well worth it, and if it meant spending fifty bucks on enough sweets to make dentists around the world cringe, it was even better. he was actually sort of excited for the day tomorrow, and not just because of the potential secrets he was about to unveil. he liked being an older figure in someone's life. he didn't consider himself a role model, but the bonding time was probably good... as long as riley's sister didn't find out.
griffin stretched in place as riley thought over his proposal and waited to be shot down. their biggest pit fall probably had to deal with their combined negativity, and the word 'no' being the most frequent in their vocabularies. or so it seemed to griff, at least. that was why he appeared to be a little shocked when she sort of agreed to the working situation. i wouldn't mind. i'd stay out of your way and maybe even get zane off your back for a bit, too. you can't go wrong either way. he grinned. besides, i have a really good wifi connection up here. he had to laugh slightly before coming to a conclusion that was a bit dark. you're always in business mode anyway, so i'm used to it. he said quietly; a bit unsure of whether that would upset her or not. it was just the way he saw her, and he couldn't help it. she could fight him on that if she wanted, but he had proof.
it wasn't often that riley blew griffin off to work, but it still happened enough to really irritate him. he knew he asked for a lot, but it hurt him to know he came in second to a job, of all things. third, if you counted her nephew... but that was a different story, and griff could at least appreciate that. oh, he said rather suddenly; the wheels turning in his head and waking up his sleepy brain. i'm just not used to you being like... you know. he gave the smallest of shrugs. he wasn't even sure how to carry on from this point, really. um. yeah. i get it now. he spluttered quickly as he scratched his head in an embarrassed fashion. god, he felt dumb. and what the hell? since when was he bashful about talking about these kinds of things? maybe it was just too early for him to be functioning properly. we'll have to set up a date then, i guess. he knew she wouldn''t be down for anything too spontaneous. she was a busy woman, after all. and with griffin's luck, he would probably roll around and try to score on the day of a deadline and end up twiddling his thumbs in the corner until close. how romantic.
surprisingly, griff hated talking about himself. even worse, he knew that practically any personal thing he had to say was something that riley already knew, thanks to her job. that whole issue was probably another reason for their lack of communication. griff just assumed she knew everything about him, so he decided it was better just to keep quiet and ask her things. not the case... even if griff did think riley seemed sort of bored whenever he talked about the band. he couldn't blame her, though. same shit, different day -- to him, anyway. yeah, i think we're setting something up for fall but... yeah. he stroked her cheek and leaned up to kiss her nose before relaxing again. it'll be different this time. i promise. he frowned, knowing he had probably just brought up something that could potentially ruin their happy go lucky day. typical. 928 WORDS FOR NICOLE AS RILEY SORRY THIS SUCKS :C

for ash as griffin before riley made any decisions involving her future, she needed to decide where her job stood on her list of priorities. if she were completely honest, zane was and probably always would be her number one priority. that is, unless she ended up with her own child. then they would be her number one. it was just that zane needed someone to take care of him, and her sister couldn’t provide money and take care of him at the same time. plus she felt sorry for the little boy. he was one of the sweetest children she’d ever come in contact with, and he’d been through a lot in his short life. he deserved as much stability as he could get, and at the moment that wasn’t very much. then she had her job and griffin. the two of them kind of got scrambled together a lot, and it was hard for her to tell which one came first at times. her job was important, and it was quite obvious that she treated it that way. she was almost always willing to drop whatever she was doing for her job. unless she was with zane or griffin. with zane the answer was easy. she’d always, always say that it could wait. if she was with griffin, it was a bit of a mental debate. should she leave griffin to finish up whatever as needed at the office, or could it wait? usually she’d let it wait, just because she didn’t get a lot of time with her boyfriend or whatever he was at the moment. there were times though that she had told griffin she needed to work. it was this and a few other things that made riley believe she was pushing him into the beds of other girls.
a small roll of her eyes and a smirk from riley was sent in griffin’s direction when he went on about finding things to blackmail her with. if he really thought zane could give him some dirt on her, who was she to stop him from trying? it could actually be interesting to see what zane could come up with, although she highly doubted it would be anything blackmail worthy. she was always on her best behavior around him, not that she really had any bad behavior to begin with. the only thing he could really tell griffin was that she cried when spongebob and patrick “died” in the spongebob movie, but even that wasn’t too bad. was it? ”if you really think so,” she told him with a small laugh, shaking her head. but the more she thought about, the more she realized that zane probably could tell griffin a few things about her. normally when she was around griffin, she was a complete adult. with zane, she tended to let her guard down and act like somewhat of a child. it helped her take care of him, because being on his level made him more willing to do what she told him to do.
maybe working from griff’s place would be good for her. the environment was a lot different than her typical work space, so maybe it would help her to relax a bit. that is, as long as they didn’t start fighting over something. but if zane was there, that probably wouldn’t happen. there had been a few times that riley had gotten angry with griffin while her nephew was around, but she always held it in for his sake. she didn’t want him seeing fights and hearing angry words. it wasn’t good for his little brain that picked things up and ran with them. not only that, she was afraid it would scare him. so griffin lucked out when zane was around, because it saved him from getting yelled at for things. not that riley wouldn’t remember to be angry with him later. she didn’t let things go until they were confronted. ”that’d actually be really nice. i’ll stop by next time. we’ll see how it goes.” hey, it couldn’t hurt to try right? maybe she’d end up finding something that really worked for her. ”i’m not always in business mode. i can relax.” she pouted a bit, even though she knew he was mostly right. there were a few times when she let the whole business thing go, but for the most part she had a business attitude toward everything. however, it really was worse once she got working.
that’s why this whole hooking up at the office thing seemed a little farfetched. it seemed that she’d stumped griffin on this one, which was actually kind of shocking. if anything, she expected him to jump right into the idea. usually he was more than ready for anything that involved him getting laid. at the same time though, he probably knew it wasn’t likely to happen. showing up at her office unannounced wasn’t really a problem, as long as he wasn’t expecting to pull her away from her desk. ”i know,” she sighed, placing her hand in her hair and ruffling it a little bit in thought. it wasn’t really like her to suggest something like this, and if anything she’d started it as a joke. now it was actually going somewhere, and she wasn’t exactly sure what to think. when he mentioned setting up a date, she looked over at him and nodded slightly. if this were to actually happen, that was probably a better idea. that way she could tell him to come by on a slower day. maybe she’d be more likely to take a break at that point. ”all right. yeah. we can do that.” again she nodded, not too sure what else to say about the situation.
this whole tour subject was really putting a damper on things, and riley wasn’t a big fan of it. however, it needed to be discussed at some point. he obviously knew why she had a problem with him going off to tour, but it wasn’t like he could stop it. well. he could stop messing around while she wasn’t there, but he couldn’t exactly stop the tour. and she didn’t want him to. that was what kept his band alive, anyway. of course the records and stuff did too, but touring helped keep that connection with the fans. in the end, it was the fans that really mattered. her gaze was down as he kissed her nose, and once he relaxed back into his spot, she turned her face away from him. all she really wanted was to trust him. ”don’t make promises you can’t keep, griffin.” her voice was low, just above a whisper. she didn’t want to go down this road today. they had been doing so well, but it was starting to seem like they truly couldn’t have a happy day. ”do you even think about me when you’re with them?” the question was kind of abrupt, but it was something that had been bothering her. in all honesty though, there was no right answer. if he didn’t, then that would just mean she wasn’t as important to him as she thought. if he did, then how could he cheat with her on his mind?

he merely gave riley a small grin that hinted he was up to no good. obviously the boy had a way with words. why else would she constantly believe his bullshit lies and come back to him? he had her wrapped around his finger and he knew it. (for now, anyway). if he wanted to get zane to tell him something, it would be a piece of cake. literally. all griffin would probably have to do was take him down the street to the bakery and bribe him. there was no need for mind games with anyone not even enrolled in high school yet. riley was a different story, and griffin was actually guilty of enjoying messing with her head from time to time. it was a sick sort of hobby, but to know that he could influence someone else's actions made him feel pretty god damn good about himself. besides, if he could squeeze a few songs out of their relationship mishaps, why not play around a bit? he stopped his facetious thoughts and returned to reality before the real 'evil' side got out of him. he was good at being bad. simple as that. just you wait and see, he challenged.
listening to ri weigh out her options made griffin nauseous. it made him nervous and unsure of things when she had to place their relationship and her work duties on a scale for close inspection. it couldn't be stressed enough that griffin knew the way he treated riley was unfair in general, but especially when it came to her work. he was rather insensitive about it all, and not understanding whatsoever. he didn't get the concept of deadlines or being responsible or anything like that. he wrote love songs, crooned into a microphone, smiled for pictures, and signed autographs for a living. the two were miles apart, except for the writing that the two occupations shared. other than that... not so much. he pursed his lips together and forced himself to smile slightly at her proposition. i look forward to it. |
he said rather plainly. he didn't want to get his hopes up, and he most definitely didn't want to disappoint her or upset her if she actually went through with it. he knew that if she were to work under his roof it'd be nearly impossible to keep him away from her. it was bad enough the one time they had already tried it out and he'd just read over her shoulder and kissed her neck to try and seduce her away from her articles. that didn't sit too well. her pout made his stomach uneasy and guilt settled in quickly. sorry. you're right, he said humbly. riley did know when to turn the business side of her off. it was just griffin who chose to see things otherwise and blame all of his faults on others. no surprise there. the whole thing about a rendezvous in her office soared over griffin's head. the last thing he expected was for her to actually agree to something so scandalous and inappropriate and... sexy. he chose to just go on and pretend like he hadn't heard her respond. it was a dumb idea in the first place on both of their parts. griffin's sour mood that surged from his lack of sleep was brewing and threatening to boil over in any moment. nothing too shocking there, either. he was a ticking time bomb, but weren't they both? it hurt griffin a great deal when riley turned away from him. he felt his jaw tighten slightly and his muscles tense up as she broke their gaze. what had he done now? he was being honest, and he was attempting to be sweet. this wasn't any game, either. he was behaving himself and trying to seem like he was actually worth all the trouble. riley saw through him at the wrong times, and it was unfortunate that because of his usual grimy antics, he was confused for being a sleazebag when he was being down to earth for real. it was his fault though, really. what are you talking about? he asked with a hard edge to his question. he raised his legs up slightly so that his knees 'trapped' riley where she was and kept her in arm's reach. he turned her chin toward him as he waited for a response, but was instead faced with another question. he lay there dumbfounded for a moment before pulling himself out from beneath riley. why do you always have to start this shit? he asked sharply as he retreated from her to the opposite end of the couch; glaring. he shook his head and directed his harsh gaze to the floor. i always think about you, ri. he said honestly. it's not about that. we've talked about this over and over and over. he ran his hands through his hair and rubbed at his temples tiredly. why did their day have to take this path? oh, right. because griffin was a horrible person. oops. you're the only one i love, so i don't see why it matters if i come back to you in the end. he rolled his eyes, searching for excuses and ways to displace the blame somehow. besides, it's not like you're there for me when i need you.[/div] 1162 WORDS FOR NICOLE AS RILEY OMG I'M SUCH A FAIL :C

for ash as griffin out of everyone in the world, riley probably knew griffin more than anyone else. she knew his good side, which not very many people knew anyway. it was an amazing thing though, and she wished it was something she got to see more often. the good times were what kept her around, because the good guy in him was the guy she loved and wanted to be with. then there was his bad side. it not only brought out his worst, but it brought out hers too. and that was why she hated it. that was also why she wasn’t too afraid of anything griffin could get out of zane. he’d already seen her at her worst, plenty of times. the only thing he could learn from zane was her childish side, and that wasn’t too much to hold against her anyway. if anything it would just prove that she actually could put business to the side for a while. she simply rolled her eyes and smirked at his challenge, even if she was slightly curious about what zane would say in regards to her. he was an interesting kid, and if anything he’d at least make something trivial seem like it was the best or worst thing in the world.
as far as work goes, riley and griffin came from two different worlds. not only did they have different schedules and priorities in their careers, but their views on each other’s jobs were completely different. while griffin seemed to lack any amount of respect for what riley did, she actually had a lot of respect for what he did. all he ever did was complain that she worked too much, so it was quite obvious that her job meant nothing to him. his job though, riley actually liked it when he worked. well. unless he was on tour. she hated that. but maybe it was her job that made her respect his job. all she did all day was read things about what his band and other bands were accomplishing and failing at. obviously she enjoyed looking into the music industry, or she’d be doing something else for a living. she gave him a small nod and a ”me too” in response to his somewhat disinterested answer. she knew what he was thinking, or at least she thought she did. the last time they’d attempted this, she’d ended up literally pushing him away from her because he was such a distraction. it wasn’t that she hadn’t enjoyed the kisses down her neck. oh, she had. that was the real problem. it was hard to ignore something that was getting her hot and bothered. the apology from griffin shocked her, mostly because she never expected him to agree with her on something involving her business like attitude. ”it’s fine,” she told him with slight confusion in her voice.
when she turned away from him, riley could literally feel griffin get tense underneath her. it wasn’t a good feeling, and she knew at that point that the following actions and conversation weren’t going to be the good side that she enjoyed so much. she kept her gaze away from him, even as he held her in place. if she really wanted away from him, it wouldn’t be too hard to fight her way out of his grasp. however, that wasn’t necessary because he soon pulled himself out from under her and sat at the opposite end of the couch, as if he wanted to be as far away from her as possible. watching him, she just grossed her arms and sat back. this wasn’t going to go well, and everything seemed to be heading downhill from here. just like every other time they’d had this discussion, his words did nothing but make it worse. groaning, she rolled her head back before pushing herself off the couch walking up a few paces, her arms crossed and her back to him.
”you really don’t get it do you?” there was a slight tone of disgust in her voice as she placed her hands on her hips and turned to face him. ”what if i decided i wanted to sleep with some other guy? it wouldn’t be hard to do, griffin. trust me. there’s plenty out there, and i wouldn’t even have to ask some of them.” it seemed like everyone riley knew could be a potential booty call, because she was mostly surrounded by random band guys that she’d done business with on occasion. just by talking to them once or twice, she knew who she could call if she ever felt like stepping out. not that she did. she’d never cheat on griffin. that would be a lot hypocritical wouldn’t it? ”why does it always have to be about sex with you? you hate my job because it keeps me from being able to spread my legs whenever you want me to. so you find someone else who can. because all you ever want is sex.” again she turned her back to him, shaking her head as she took a few more steps. when riley got angry, she tended to walk around. it seemed to prevent her from doing other things, like slapping or throwing whatever her hand could reach.
after a few moments, she turned back to face him again, running her hand through her hair as she did. ”so what? if i just quit my job, moved in here, and became your personal booty call would that change things? because that’s not what i am, griffin. and that’s never what i’ll be. i’m sorry i can’t be there every time you get the urge. don’t you think i’m the same way? but you don’t see me running out and finding the first person who will fix it.” she sighed, running her hands over her face before sitting down in the floor and pulling her knees to her chest. ”have you ever thought about why i even stay with you?” her voice was suddenly calmer, and she rested her chin on her knees. ”i don’t date just for the sake of dating. i never have. i want a future, griffin. i want a family. i want kids.” again she stood, scrambling to her feet and turning away as she tried her hardest to fight back tears. ”but i refuse to let my kids end up like zane. so if all you want is someone who is going to be your booty call, tell me now so i can walk out that door and never come back, griffin.” she turned to him, looking a little more broken than the strong tone of voice she had been using. in all honesty, she hated fighting with him. all she really wanted was to crawl back into his lap and forget all of this, but once it started it was practically impossible to work backwards.

(mainly just he and riley, but still.) she was the most important person in his life and there was no way of getting around that, as much as griffin hoped, prayed, and crossed his fingers that there was. he was a douchebag who rarely told her the truth about much at all and he knew it. she didn't owe him anything, and even though griff was well aware of the fact, he wanted nothing more than the blatant truth from her. no more bullshitting and cutting corners. he wanted to be smacked in the fucking face if that was what it was going to take to get a straightforward word out of her. he didn't care. he was just sick of the slow walk down the inevitable path. why couldn't they just pick up the damn pace and run?
their body language at least seemed to be speeding things up. however, it was different than usual. whenever riley was sitting in his lap it usually meant things were going to take a much more loving direction, but then again, when it came to these two, one could never really be too sure what to expect. they were such at destructive and tumultuous couple that were wrong and right for each other in all of the ways possible. their closeness barely last five minutes before he wanted little to do with her. his lively eyes seemed to drain and stared at her blankly from his side of the sofa as she stood and walked away. griff couldn't really blame her, but he was supposed to be mad at her right now. he didn't really remember why exactly, but he was sure that with her pissed off pose she was certainly going to remind him in just a moment or so.
defensively, griffin cross his arms over his chest. a daunting eyebrow rose into his mussed hairline, and he scoffed at her openly; jaw agape. oh, |
he sniffed. i didn't know you had guys lined up to fuck. my apologies, he shook his head, even if he knew he was wrong. he'd rather die than admit it. he knew what she meant, and he really did get it. it was just a hard thing for him to deny those urges and behave himself. it made him sound like a dog, but at times, that was truly all griff was. he could have no regard for other's feelings if he was focused on himself and there was never any real remorse or regret about it. it was like flipping a switch, though. he could go from being sweet and lovely to manipulative and brash in a matter of moments. it wasn't fair. none of it was, really. riley deserved the entire world and griffin was just a huge unwanted anchor holding her down and tripping her up. however, he was much too selfish to ever let her go. stop it, griff barked quietly. don't talk about me like i'm obsessed with having sex, riley. he rolled his eyes and stood up. he didn't much like the fact that he was seated while she was standing. it was just another thing that made him feel like a child and he hated every minute of it. she wasn't a parent patronizing a child. she wasn't even aunt riley scolding zane. she was his girlfriend, and they were arguing. civilly. well... sort of. it's not about that. it's just about being together with someone who cares about you. griff felt himself frowning but couldn't stop it. she wasn't looking at him anyway, so why did it matter if his weak side was showing? some of these girls drop whatever they're doing to see me. you wouldn't do that in a million years, ri. griffin seemed to be simmering down some, but that didn't mean he was completely done and fizzled out. he felt himself just growing crankier and crankier. this was the last thing he wanted to ever be dealing with... but especially not when he had just woken up a while ago. he watched her turn around and fought the urge to comfort her. the look in her eyes to the way he mouth was turned to the words coming out of her mouth... it truly made griffin sad inside. it was never fun to watch someone you truly loved be in real pain. griff felt beyond horrible and disgusted with himself, but riley seemed to be letting loose. he wanted her to let this out, and he had a few things to say himself. he just didn't particularly happen to like what she had to say, but beggars can't be choosers. do you have to be such a bitch? he asked as she sat down. he mirrored her actions and sank back into the couch. you're not a booty call. i love you and you know that and just because i don't always act like it doesn't mean it isn't true. he sighed. that's not all you are to me. no one else fills the gap that you leave when you aren't with me. he admitted. whether riley cared or not, griff wasn't aware. he was just running out of arguments. griff's heart sank again when she appeared to be on the verge of tears. all because of him. yet again. i want all of that too, just not... he paused briefly to lower his voice and relax his tone. just not right now. i can't. he shook his head, feeling the guilt building up in his throat and spilling out into the words. i want to wait until i can be there for you whenever you need me and i can... like, commit to you and always be around. griff rested his chin between his palms. i don't want us to end up like your sister and zane either. at least the two were on the same page with that. he sighed as his fingers numbly clawed at his face in an exhausted fashion. fuck, he hated this feeling. please don't leave. how many times had he said that before? it was better he didn't exactly know. i'll change. now, that was a first for griffin bueller. if riley didn't drop dead from a heart attack, griffin might just die from the idea of actually going through with it. he had never said that type of thing before, and this was probably the best place to start. for ash as griffin arguing with griffin wasn’t a fun thing, even if they did it so often that riley could probably list it as a hobby. they could get really heated sometimes, and it wasn’t rare for someone to storm out and slam a door so hard that things fall and break. usually it was riley doing that, and she always felt bad about breaking things later but it happened. she’d slapped griffin on a few occasions, something else she felt bad about later. typically, she was someone who hated violence and felt that there were other ways to resolve your problems. but it was griffin, and he knew just how to get under her skin. out of all the people in the world, he was the only one who could get her so angry that she lost control of herself. that was when things started breaking and he started getting slapped. this was why she hated arguing with him. if they could have those trivial arguments that most couples had like ‘no you will not open the door for me i can take care of myself’ or something, she probably wouldn’t mind it so much. or if they were one of those couples that took their argument to the bedroom to let it out, she probably wouldn’t mind either. but they were neither one of those things. instead they were the couple that fought, broke up, and made up later. sure, it was probably interesting for other people to watch and talk about, but it sucked to be inside of it. and it really, really sucked to see people making comments about how griffin should quit going back to her because some girl he’d slept with wanted him. yeah. that kind of made riley want to get violent too.
a scoff came from riley, and she took shook her head and crossed her arms. it was typical of griffin to take her words and twist them to work in his advantage instead of hers. she’d never said she had guys lined up to sleep with, and they both knew that wasn’t what she meant. the only good thing about griffin twisting her words was that meant that he was losing, and he had no better argument than to put words in her mouth. ”well i did,” she told him, standing up a little straighter. ”but i think they decided to find some other girls that are easier.” her eyes narrowed at him, obviously attempting to stab at him. sometimes she honestly felt like she could do no better than griffin. not that griffin was a bad guy, deep down. she knew that. if he were to stop stepping out on her, he’d be the perfect guy for her. that was their only problem, and it was the main source of all their fights. still though, sometimes she felt like if griffin wanted to cheat on her then everyone would. there was no stopping it. in a way, you could say that griffin hadn’t ruined the way she viewed guys. well griffin and zane’s dad. maybe it was a trent thing. trent girls obviously couldn’t hold onto their men.
sometimes just listening to griffin attempt to defend himself made riley angrier than whatever it was he’d done to make her angry in the first place. half the things he said made no sense to her anyway. she just shook her head, fighting the want to tell him that he was in fact obsessed with having sex. it wasn’t like it bothered her when it was her. if anything it made her feel special that he wanted her so often. it was a nice little ego boost for her, not that she’d ever admit that. she laughed, a sarcastic laugh but a laugh nonetheless, and shook her head. ”you honestly think these girls care about you? they’re nothing but band sluts, griffin. all they want is the chance to say they slept with that one guy from that one band. you’re a notch in their belt, griffin.” again she shook her head, putting her palm to her forehead. she sighed softly as she dropped her hand, looking down at the floor. ”i’m trying, griff. really. when it’s zane, you know i can’t just blow him off. but work, i’m trying. i want to. i always have. but it’s hard. i don’t like that i’ve put work before you at times. if i could, i would stop everything and just be with you.” her voice was significantly softer as she spoke, her hands placed loosely on her hips. it hurt her, truly hurt her, that griffin felt that way. it just made her feel like all of this was her fault.
as she sat down and hugged her knees, she looked up at griffin to see him sitting back down on the couch. it was kind of hard to read him, but he seemed a little conflicted. they both seemed to be going down from their anger, which was probably a good thing. at least no one had been hit, and at least nothing had been broken. also, they were still together. right? it was hard for even riley to keep up with whether or not they were an official couple. she wasn’t sure how to take his comment on no one filling the gap like she did. well, that was a good thing she supposed. it was her gap to fill, and no one else’s. if someone else could fill it, then he might as well be with them and not her. but the fact that he was trying to fill it wasn’t so comforting. ”i know i’m not,” she told him in a low voice. ”and i know you love me, i just.” she sighed, not too sure what there was to say. he knew everything there was to say. he knew that she didn’t like that he cheated and lied. he knew that she wanted things to be better. ”i hate fighting with you,” she finally managed.
for some reason, hearing that griffin wanted a family too made riley feel a lot better about their relationship as a whole. at least they had a common future in mind, which was a good start on things. the fact that he didn’t want kids right now didn’t bother her in the slightest, because she knew that having a baby now would just be too much extra work. not to mention that they were nowhere near ready to be parents. taking care of zane and having your own kid were two different worlds. it was also nice knowing that griffin wanted to wait until he had the ability to be there for her whenever she needed him, because a pregnant riley would most likely be a very needy one too. ”good, because i’ll need you.” she looked at him, the sadness starting to leave her eyes, being replaced with a look of sincerity. ”i need you now, griffin.” she stood, started to walk toward him but stopping when she heard him say two words that had never come out of his mouth before. he’d told her a lot of lies in their time together, so it was hard to tell if he was being genuine or not. deep down, she really wanted to believe that he’d change. she opened her mouth to speak, but she couldn’t find any words to say. instead, she went and sat next to him on the couch, resting her head against his shoulder. ”i love you,” she told him, letting herself lay against him. what else was there to say? she didn’t want to say something negative and cause another fight, but she wasn’t too sure if she could believe that he’d change either.
