[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: dddddd; border: #cccccc solid 8px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;] EVERY OTHER LOVER IN THIS CITY HAS GOT A SONG TO SING Tagged for: steph as ted <3 The Words: 1079 The Outfit: sort of described in there somewhere The Notes rambleess if there was one thing that mae ever loved, it was coffee. well, music too. music and coffee. those were her two true loves in the world. she honestly wouldn’t be able to live without either of them in her life. they were also the only things that she would openly admit she loves - everything else she’ll deny it. it’s just the way she operates and the only explanation was the way she was raised: by hippies who taught her all about free love and how important in was to be free and not let anything tie her down wherever she was so she’d be able to spread her wings and fly whenever and wherever she wanted to. she always enjoyed that philosophy, even when she was old enough to make her own decisions she tended to stick with that outlook on life. she would date people in high school but it would never last long. the moment the word love was uttered she’d find some way out. but with music and coffee, there was no pressure from the other one to stay or commit herself completely. coffee would always just be coffee and it would be there no matter what with no pressure of giving herself to that drink and that drink only. and music was the same way -always there and always reliable. and somewhere along the way of growing up and failing at relationships but loving music, she’d met people who loved music as much as she did. it was comforting being that close with people who seemed that in love with music as she was, so she’d finally found what felt like her niche in the world. she felt at home with them. especially with one particular band member that she’d seemed to click with right away, but she would never admit that to anyone. they were all her best friends, really, even if she did drag some of them on innumerable coffee dates it was a wonder they weren’t sick of them. and today was just another one of those coffee date days. her victim of said coffee date would be one of her favorite people, of course - none other than ted sheridan; fellow band member and someone who seemed to make butterflies sort of appear in her stomach every so often (but she would never ever admit that to anyone - not even herself, really).
it was early yet, not quite time for their agreed coffee date, but mae was already feeling anxious. sure she’d already been to starbucks at least twice that day - but a girl could never have enough starbucks, right? especially not when there were important matters to discuss with an important bandmate. okay, so maybe important things meant just like chatting and awkwardly flirting while they sat holding coffees in starbucks watching people come and go, but she considered it an important part of her daily life. it was a nice break from their normal time in the studio and now that tour’s started, a nice way to escape the bus and the bustle of tour. it was nice to get a worldwide tour of starbucks, though, that was for sure. man she really wanted that coffee. ted would understand if she wanted to go a little on the earlier side, right? it wasn’t like the two of them were particularly busy at this point, sure he was maybe off somewhere practicing or getting things all sorted for their next show, and she was sitting plucking at keyboard keys and doing her vocal exercises, but the thought of their coffee date just kept coming back to the front of her mind despite how hard she tried to put it to the back. as she plucked at the keys, she figured she could always start getting ready, maybe change out of this old shirt she’d stolen from around the bus a while back and in to something nicer - well, cleaner and less torn up. so she stopped plucking at keys and playing a bridge from some of their songs and stood up, making her way over to her space to go pick out something to wear and get changed. she ran her fingers through her hair to get out a few tangles here or there, but for the most part she hadn’t done much with it since she’d showered and styled it, so it still looked alright. she picked out a somewhat nice shirt and a pair of high-waisted shorts before she gave herself the okay. grabbing her wallet and her cell phone, their agreed meeting time at starbucks was another twenty minutes away, but she could start heading over there a little on the earlier side, get them some choice seating like in those big comfy chairs by the artificial fire.
with that thought, she started on her way to her favorite place with a skip in her step. the weather was nice, with the sun shining down and a light breeze to rustle the leaves on the various types of trees overhead. brown eyes went up to the sky with a smile as she continued down the sidewalk, the walk to her favorite place short but still enjoyable. she walked through the door to the familiar smell and atmosphere of the coffee shop, different baristas behind the counter (so nobody would call her out on spending too much time loitering in their business). she walked over to the counter and just ordered a simple iced latte, paying for it and waiting at the counter while the baristas made her drink along with a few others, her eyes scanning the room to find out if her favorite chairs were open, lighting up when she saw they were. she grew anxious waiting for her coffee, not wanting any other patrons of the coffee shop to wander in and take her and ted’s seats. the moment the coffee touched the counter and her name was called, she scooped it up made her way over to the chairs, setting her latte on the small table in between the two chairs, pulling her legs up and getting comfortable before taking a sip of her coffee. she took a moment to check her watch, the time she’d taken to walk over and get her coffee, ten or fifteen minutes had passed. ted would probably be here any second and then their coffee date could begin. |

she's shining just the way i like it. three words - coffee, cigarettes, and music. these were the words that could pretty much sum up some of the members of the quarter club, more specifically mae and ted - sure, this band was already something special, not just for their sound, but their silly vices and addictions such as the aforementioned two. it was mae with the coffee, ted with the cigarettes, and it was the sharing and co-creating of the music between them that could have defined them by the book as 'soulmates' - or at least, anything mirrored with that opinion of perfection in their dynamic. popular belief always said that the two c's (the aforementioned coffee and cigarettes, mind you) went together like peas in a pod, and while ted most definitely agreed with such a thing, somehow it always turned out to be more than what it really was; at least, to other people looking from the outside on in. the analogy was prominent in his life, always applied to his friendship with mae from the very start when he moved across and around the country to start the next chapter of his life and found her by chance. perhaps he owed their friendship through coffee, through the very cliche thing called an indie coffee shop where he and her had ended up performing at on a same night in columbus. he didn't know what had brought him there, from the east coast to the midwest, probably from the advice of other people who were supporting him through that time and encouraging him to journey to a place he had never been before. ted recalled the memories of old, how he had gotten to this point in time, fortunate. he had been only twenty-two at the time, almost twenty-three but still young and hopeful to pursue a career in something that had left its mark on his youth. music was one thing he had no doubt in his mind that he would always be passionate over. it was then when he and mae met, and for the duration of their time as friends and continuing into the present, they were still the two who seemed to click the most in the formation of their current job. and this, this was the reason why a lot of people interpretted every interaction between the two of them as love. everyone, from his best friends from home who had seen the interaction at shows and after parties, and especially his brother tanner - they were all pushing him in various degrees, and though he wasn't quite sure if mae was getting the same sort of treatment or even really knew about things in that way, he couldn't help but feel bad for her more than himself. no, he wasn't admitting anything - it was just, the time would come whenever it would come, and even if he was admitting anything, he would have to admit it to himself first before speaking to anyone else about it, especially her. but they had their whole lives to worry about, the summer plans of this year's skyline festival taking the wheel and daily priority of life, and anything that pertained to his interests in women just smoothly made its way to the backburner - even if lots of people loved to bring it up on a day-to-day basis.
taking a long drag from his cigarette, ted relaxed himself as he let go of the smoke, resting his foot against the stone siding of the hotel's outer facade. the sound of his heel made a click against the foundation's hardness as he looked around at the passing cars on the street, his blue eyes just observing the lives of other people going on around him. everyone on tour had had an off day today, and it was the first of a few that were scattered across the string of dates throughout the country. the free day was seemingly strategically placed if you had asked his opinion, just shy of the beginning of the tour and a sort of comfort to you when you were starting to miss your bed at home. well played, relapse. he took another drag, blowing a smoke ring as he looked around once more. luckily he wasn't thrown off with the calm of the atmosphere in contrast to the busy nature of tour life at the venues. here he was just a normal person again, and he wondered how many people in an industry with more fame and could have given up this normalcy. this sort of life as a musical gypsy was rather appealing to him, and ted had always felt this way about travelling even long before he was allowed to go outside by himself. through college he had yearned to tour and travel with a group that was just as much into it as he was, and better late than never he had found the right people in his current band. a check to his watch told him the time - he was taking a quick smoke before starting to make his way towards the main street that was a block away and had everything necessary to his needs at the moment. which, included coffee. the rest of his band including his brother had been split between the city to roam, the hotel room to just lounge, or the bus to have some writing privacy. they were fairly a quiet bunch, each reveling in their own time where everything was able to come together in their own centers, and he had no need to worry or wonder what everyone else was doing like some would have to worry in the other bands that they were touring with. he himself knew that mae was having her time on the bus before their scheduled meeting time, writing the other part to the music that they had brainstormed the night before during a midnight session at the hotel. it was ideal for them, and their dynamic was very easy. the two soft-spoken and optimistic people, they who always managed to find inspiration in each other's strengths and talents. not to mention that he felt a deeper connection with her, not only their similiar philosophies but in the fact that they could both touch keys and express themselves to each other without much more gesture to go along with it. it was a match to perfection if you could have asked anyone on the outside, and it proved true in their musical harmonies and more. sometimes ted found himself staring a little too long at mae, when she smiled and laughed and how she tucked her hair behind her ear when she was thinking. he noticed plenty about her from the get-go, and admittedly deep down he was enamored by her spirit, free and easygoing. and surely he hoped that she enjoyed his company as much as he enjoyed hers, as she was one of few he knew who actually appreciated his talks about philosophies or the fact that he would wander out to the rooftops of buildings to write under the stars.
ted used his heel to put his thrown cigarette out, and with another check of the time his long legs were swiftly carrying him down the sidewalk towards his destination. earlier in the morning tanner had made another joke about his and mae's "intimate" time together, with the emphasis on the date part of the term "coffee date." his brother was surely convinced that it was some code phrase for something else like canoodling in private, but ted just waved it all off and like usual, stated that it was simply literal, going out to get coffee. everyone and their mother knew just how addicted mae was to starbucks, it was just one of those facts of life and the quarter club that you would happen to know off the bat if you liked them. it was still fairly early in the day and the sun hadn't quite come out to beat down the people with its extreme rays for the middle of summer, and luckily even if it did choose to come out to play early, ted was already within feet of the nearest starbucks that they had both pinpointed through their phones last night when they hatched this plan. the date was daily, and the day wouldn't have been the same without it. through the glass of the store front ted could see that his companion was already there, early and having beaten him to the location though he was definitely on time. he eyed her two-toned hair, something he had still yet to get used to, and when she caught sight of him he returned her wave of hello as he opened the door, smiling. ted strode towards the counter and gave his order to the barista at the cash register, making small talk with her as he reached in his back pocket for his wallet to get a few bills out. after tipping her and getting his own venti-sized latte, he walked over to the table that mae had chosen for the both of them. "you look lovely, and pretty excited on that latte," he remarked, his voice silken as ever. placing his free hand on her shoulder, he leaned down to give her the casual cheek touch kiss a la europeans, their normal greeting to each other. "you're early, love... or am i the one late?" ted laughed, adjusting his collar as he slid into the chair across from her. he felt both warmer and cooler at the same time, from being in her presence and from the air conditioning of the room around them. putting his hands and his drink on the table, his eyes met mae's as another smile made it onto his lips, just before he took a sip of his coffee. it was so natural to be around her, it made his day each time. "so, how's your morning been? good, i hope?"
